Fruit tree knowledge
Grape vines
Grape vines are one of the oldest cultivated crops known to man. Growing grapes can be very rewarding and yields are usually high for the investment made. There are three main types of grape vines. They are Vitis vinifera which are usually grow to make wine like Chardonnay, Vitis lambrusca these are North Americas native grape species like Concord, and Vitis rotundifolia more commonly know as Muscadine grape vines. All three types can be used for eating, making wines and juices, or preserves like jams and jellies although some varieties tend to be better for different purposes. While wine grapes will grow in most climates the North American varieties have proven to be much more cold hardy while Muscadines have shown best growth when grown in humid heat. North America grape varieties and Muscadines both can be used to produce wines but they truly shine when used for eating fresh or making juices jams or jellies. All grape species grow best in sandy or gravelly loams that have good drainage although most grape varieties will grow in any soil. Grapes do not require fertilizing but some growers apply a balance fertilizer like 10-10-10 in early spring just after buds break.
Cherry trees
Cherry trees are very popular fruiting trees that also produce flowers. Cherries are planted throughout the world for landscaping, fruit producing purposes, and their great wood. Cherries can range in flavor, color, and size but are generally recognizable as cherries when eaten. The skin of the cherry fruit is usually smooth and fairly thin. The flesh ranges in color from light yellow to blood red and is usually juicy. Cherries are usually either sweet or sour/tart. Sweeter cherries are usually grown to eat fresh while the sour/tart varieties like the North Star Cherry trees are used for baking as well as eating. Cherry trees range greatly in size from about six feet, for the dwarf cherry trees, to upwards of thirty feet or so. Cherry tree have very distinct bark that is attractive with what appear to be stripes running horizontally. Cherry trees thrive in deep, well drained loamy soils. Proper hydration and plenty of sun is also important when growing cherry trees.
Peach Fruits & Nectarines

Elberta Peach
Both peaches and nectarines are peach trees dispute of their differences. Both trees can be grown and cared for identically by growers. Most of the multitude of varieties most peach trees and nectarine trees are well adapted to the American climates. Peaches can be planted in almost any soil conditions if drainage is decent to good but thrive in sandy loams and pure loams. Both are heavy nitrogen feeders and may benefit from feeding of zinc, magnesium, boron, and potassium which are all readily obtained by fertilizers. A sign that your peaches needed zinc would be that the leaves are small and clustered at the end of bare branches. To avoid any problems experienced growers topically apply an all-purpose fertilizer every spring when buds are starting to swell and break. Soil amendments and organic fertilizers can also be used to ensure large harvests of peaches and nectarines
Blueberries
Blueberries are easy to grow and enjoyed by many! There are two types of blueberry bushes, highbush blueberries and Rabbiteye or lowbush blueberry bushes. Both are popular and produce excellent fruit but they do differ in some ways. Highbush varieties are more commonly grown in northern states and do well in colder weather conditions. Highbush varieties thrive in frequently watered, rich soil that is well drained similar to the conditions that rhododendrons and azaleas are grown in since they are related. Rabbiteye or lowbush varieties enjoy similar conditions but tend to grow best in warmer southern climates. Blueberries are free of any diseases making them easy to grow and a favorite among many.
Citrus trees

Blood Orange
Citrus trees are an excellent choice for any gardener. They are both beautiful exotic and hardy! The most common and well known citrus trees are oranges, lemons, grapefruit and limes. Most citrus trees can be grown outside is sub tropical to tropical regions only. If a grower that lives in a cooler zone still desires to grow a citrus trees then they must be potted and moved indoors during the winter or covered well if left outside in an area that is on the fringe of the minimum desired zone. But this can be done we have a Wonderful Pomegranate tree growing outdoors now and we are located in zone 6! Trees that are potted or on fringe zones should still produce good amounts of fruit if cared for properly. Tangerines have shown to be more cold hardy then other varieties surviving repeated temperature drops to 0°F or lower although this can negatively affect fruit quality. Once citrus fruits are harvested their sweetness will not increase and they will not continue to ripen. Tangerine can be grown outside in regions with more marked sub-zero degrees in winter, although this may affect fruit quality. Lemons have also show some cold weather hardiness. Citrus trees thrive in full sun, fertile soils, and regular watering.
Blackberries and RaspBerries

Raspberry Bush

Different blackberry varieties can taste very different to others while raspberries have a more uniform flavor. All raspberries and blackberries thrive in full sun and like plenty of water. Deep, rich, well drained soils tend to best suite these bushes. To give roots a good area to spread and develop the soil should be worked and loosened-up to a depth of at least 12 inches.
